Thursday Opinion Page A4 The Spectrum October 1, 1998 www.southern-utah.com Letters Thanks for the new road To the Editor: Hurrah, hurrah! Many people are truly pleased and happy that the former dirt road between Newcastle and Enterprise, Utah has final been rebuilt and surfaced. It is delightful to travel and cuts off at least 8 miles for any who have to travel it going to of coming from Enterprise. Lots of business is now done in Enterprise. Church and school, banking, grocery and other forms of shopping are among the reasons for having a super good road to travel on. It has taken years of planning on parts of Iron County Commissioners and others in responsible positions plus many requests from our local townspeople to get this dream completed.

I personally want to thank everyone who has helped in any way; you are appreciated. Thank you. Luzon K. Forsyth Newcastle Clinton's not the only one -To the Editor: I read and watch the news of the Clinton investigation and get more and more nauseous! Bill Clinton is hardly the only sex offender in government. He's probably just the most stupid because of the level of his office.

Do we really want our government concentrating on the sexual habits and transgressions of our officials? If so, we may have to reinvent our system because no one will run for elective office or be confirmed into appointed positions. Is America going to permanently become one big soap opera? We seem to have lost respect for each other as human beings. We seem to have forgotten that ramifications go Can you name 5 successful things Clinton accomplished? To the Editor Attention Liberals: Name 5 successful policies that Mr. Clinton has accomplished that no other president could have achieved besides the "great economy," which would have been great despite and no thanks to his efforts. His most successful policies have been to "GIVE AWAY THE FARM" faster than any president yet in office to FOREIGN INTER- ESTSynd to further accelerate the agenda of the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR).

Isn't it interesting that the first thing he did, after his repentance, was run right to his true bosses the (CFR) to assure them that within 30 days their agenda would be carried out if given the opportunity? That is money contributed to the IMF (International Monetary Fund). We all have lost sight of the purpose of the Federal Government to defend and protect the borders of the United States. Our borders have been infiltrated by aliens (green card or note) who are sucking this country dry of its National fundsbenefits. Take, for example, the states of New York and California which have been totally corruptedbankrupted by this foreign element. These groups for the most part bring their diseases, a good portion of them have criminal intentftackgrounds (ChineseHispanic gangs) and they bring their socialistic theories here.

Why are these foreigners able to receive business loans for This is why almost every mini-marketgas station etc. is ownedoperated by an eastern Indian, Arab, Filipino or whatever in California. Wouldn't you love that? Even yesterday on C-Span, we find Cuban spies in Miami. We find too that high security military missile technology was shipped to China, no one cared; and now this year, the government will-import 40,000 eastern Indian electricians to undercut the annual salaries of American electricians by $10,000 a year. These Indians Ripken.

Van Winkle The message did not get through have employment assigned to them already? well beyond the individual. didn't know it came from prisoners. Bingo. A few hundred Canadians infected with an incurable deadly disease. The Citizen says it has copies of internal Arkansas documents from police, who at about this time were investigating rumors: Clinton appointees to prison board had demanded bribes in i exchange for renewing eontTict with the state of Arkansas in 1985.

The matter was dropped after investigators decided to accept the prison board's explanation: Bill Clinton had been very concerned about reports of inadequate medical care; a mysterious $25,000 payment was actually a legitimate fee to obtain the services of an "ombudsman" for the prisoners, though no letter of agreement or other written documentation could be found. According to the state trooper's notes, HMA chief Leonard Dunn went out of his way to boast to them that he was a "friend of Gov. Clinton." Coincidence? Or a piece of a puzzle we didn't even know was there? I don't know. One thing I do know: Mr. Name Withheld, the conscientious guy who tried to inform the proper authorities about Vince Foster's distress over "tainted blood." your message didn't get through.

If you contact me I'll try to bring it to their attention. Universal Press Syndicate Can 1 tell you a little story? I warn you, 1 don't know how it ends yet. Maybe I never will. Once upon a time in fact, a day or two after Vince Foster died a man phoned the White House Counsel's Office. "This was not, the line that kooks typically source tola me.

Lunatics call the main office number. This guy called one of Vince's assistants directly. The man said he had some information that might be important. Something had upset Vince Foster greatly just days before he died. Something about "tainted Gallagher blood" that both Vince Foster and President Clinton knew about, this man said.

"I'm only telling you this now because Vince Foster was very distressed about this only days before his death," the mysterious caller (whose name 1 am withholding) said. "I'm not saying this caused his suicide. I'm only saying it might have contributed to his distress and I thought someone should know." The White House Counsel's Office didn't pay much attention. "Probably a kook," they agreed around the office. Probably.

Except that when his name was typed into the computer log of phone calls Thomas Sowell this has happened already in California to every industry there is. You barely find an American doctor in California anymore because the graduate schools will not train Americans only the minorities. These foreigners coming from socialistic governments usually bring their philosophy with them and of course join the ranks of the democrats when nationalized as citizen, interesting? Mr. Clinton has failed to provide protection for our borders, he has defamed the military, his polls and statistics are dishonest and do not reflect the opinion of the American people. He and his administration are traitors serving the interests of the Council of Foreign Relations! Now, according to Hillary, if you are not a Democrat sharing their beliefs, then you are not an American but a right-wing conspirator.

Impeachment would suit him fine. Arrividecci Mr. Clinton. Suzan De Witt St. George Maggie Gallagher for Vince, something strange happened.

The computer flashed "password required" or some such phrase indicating a special code was needed to open that file. "Aw, probably just a computer glitch," Bernie Nussbaum, who was then chief White House counsel said at the time. And so the matters far as I 'oppedl' strange little memory' fragrn'enf, meaningless'' in itself, no? Until last week, when a story published in The Ottawa Citizen suddenly jogged it front and center. "HIV BLOOD CAME FROM ARKANSAS JAIL," the headline screamed. Then, The Ottawa Citizen reports: "A U.S.

firm with links to U.S. President Bill Clinton collected HIV-tainted blood from Arkansas prison inmates in the 1980s and shipped it to Canada, newly uncovered documents reveal. It is likely that several hundred, perhaps thousands, were infected by the tainted products." Seems the now-defunct Health Management Associates, headed by an FOB named Leonard Dunn (who served as head of the finance committee in Clinton's 1990 gubernatorial election campaign, for instance) had a contract to offer medical care to and sell blood from Arkansas prisoners. By 1985, the AIDS crisis made it impossible to sell prisoners' blood in the United States or most other places. HMA found one willing blood broker in Montreal who retailed it to another Canadian company who revolutionized the way baseball would be played ever since.

Hitters started holding the bat down at the knob and swinging from the heels, instead of choking up and poking singles here and there. Low-scoring games won by bunts and stolen bases gave way to slugfests. Ruth was historic in yet another sense. He was, quite simply, the greatest ballplayer that ever lived and that record has never been seriously challenged. Babe Ruth was a great pitcher before he became a great hitter.

He still holds the American League record for shutouts in a season by a left-hander. His record for the most consecutive shutout innings pitched in a World Series 29 innings lasted longer than his record for the most home runs in a season. Ruth is the only man to have led the league in all four major categories, in one season or another, during his career highest winning percentage and lowest earned run average as a pitcher and highest batting average and omacynep we-, laughing-stock son an international level? Why worry about the content of Titanic when graphic sex is reported in our local news sources? Is it any wonder even young children are acting put? As a grandmother, 1 find this focus to be very scary. How can we instill the "good" of anything (sex, love, goals, achievement, education, public service) when those who lead come across as self-serving, untrustworthy, and How can our truly needy areas of concern ever get any attention? As a taxpayer, I say ENOUGH! If we're determined to impeach Clinton, let's get rid of Starr, all of Congress, and their servants as well. Make it a clean sweep.

We need normalcy and some sense of balance in our governmental system. Otherwise, the present-day social and environmental ills are going to escalate to a point I don't even want to think about. Eva J. McLellan St. George Mark McGwire's third consecutive year of hitting 50 or more home runs.

He is for real. While Maris hit one more home run than Ruth in 50 more times at bat, McGwire hit 70 homers in fewer times at bat than the Babe had when he hit 60. Big Mac is in fact the only man in the history of baseball to hit home runs with greater frequency than Ruth, in proportion to his times at bat. Moreover, this is the second season in which McGwire lias done that. With all of McGwire's greater achievements than Maris, there is still no justification for the incredible difference in the way these two men were treated.

Maris, like McGwire, was a quiet, decent man who was respected by his teammates. Yet Maris was treated like a pariah by much of the media and the public. When Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle made runs at Babe Ruth's home-run record, they were cheered. But Maris was resented, perhaps because he was considered an upstart at these Olympian heights or because he was SINCE 7TC eem livinq A Ue FOU ONLY THP McGwire and Sosa have been fantastic but Babe still greatest most home runs as a hitter. If you want to win a bet with someone, bet him that Babe Ruth stole home more times than Lou Brock.

While there are now three players who hit more home runs in a season than Ruth and one who hit more homers over a lifetime, Ruth is still in a class by himself when it comes to slugging average. While batting averages are based on how many hits you get, in proportion to your times at bat, slugging averages are based on how many total bases those hits add up to. For example, if you hit two singles, a double and a home run in ten times at bat, that adds up to 8 total bases, giving you a slugging average of .800. You have to hit often, as well as hard, to do that. Obviously, no one can slug .800 all season unless he is Babe Ruth.

The Babe was the only man to have slugged over .800 and he did two seasons in a row. He is still the greatest. Creators Syndicate Bruce Tinsley not as much of a personality. Maris was hounded by the media, in person and in print, and he began to lose hair from the stress. When he hit his record-breaking 61st home run, only about one-third of the seats in Yankee Stadium were filled, in contrast to the packed ball parks for both McGwire and Sosa in the closing days of this season.

Whatever the reasons lor the differences, such disparities are among (he many inequities that have always been part of human life. The only thing we can do is decide whether to whine over them or move on. Maris took it and moved on. As for Babe Ruth, he faced no such pressures, and his record of 60 home runs in 1927 was mi such boll from the blue. He had already held the previous record of 59 since 1921.

In fact. Ruth first broke the home run record with 29 round-trippers in 1919. It was Ruth who put the home run on the map and Gary Trudeau MALLARD FILLMORE ark McGwire and Sammy Sosa have been a godsend at a time when we desperately needed somebody in public life to show some class and be someone that young people could look up to. Incidentally, it shows how time flies that neither of these guys had been born when Roger Maris set the home-run record that they both broke. Now that Big Mac is Sowell the new home-run king, how does he compare with Roger Maris and with Babe Ruth before him? Maris was a fine, all-around ballplayer who was voted Most Valuable Player the year before he broke Ruth's home-run record.

But Maris never before or since came within 20 home runs of the record he set in ll He was a one-year wonder. By contrast, this was D00NESBURY GOODMtXNIHG.
