LOCAL STATE The Spectrum Thursday October 18 2001 A5 Man disavows aid fund after losing family in attacks By CATHERINE BLAKE Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY A restaurant manager who says he lost 12 family members in the New York terrorist attacks said Wednesday he would rather forfeit nearly $20000 in contributions than release the family names Steve employer lying donated $15000 to start an aid fund after hearing that co workers were taking collections at the truck stop restaurant where he works The company was holding the money until Mendenhall provided a list of the family names or showed death certificates said company attorney Barre Burgon After repeated media inquiries during the past five weeks and a call from Burgon on Wednesday Mendenhall said he wanted to wash his hands of the attention and the money told me he values his priva cy more than the Burgon said in a telephone interview from the Provo based travel plaza com pany The money will be refunded to the donors and the $500 collected in cash will go to the Red Cross Burgon said Mendenhall has repeatedly shunned inquiries refusing to talk to journalists police or even Sen Orrin Hatch He told co workers he felt badgered and wanted all the attention to go away Co workers said his wife relat ed to the missing family members by blood is deathly ill and that he is shielding her from the spotlight The alleged missing family two stepsons their wives six chil dren and two nenhews traveled to New York for vacation'and wrote in an mail that they intended to visit the World Trade Center Sept 11 They been heard from since said Michale Smith general manager of the Springville restau rant at which he works Mendenhall who Smith says is in his mid 40s now appears quiet and despondent a marked change from his former persona talked to Steve and his wife and you can tell they are going through rough Smith said family is from Italy and they are very private They want this to get out at Smith said Mendenhall who lives in Provo had been with the restaurant since May Smith absolutely believes story one here has questioned his credibility Everyone can see the guy is in he said Smith said Mendenhall gave Hatch Utah the list of names However Hatch spokeswoman Heather Barney said the office has not received any names and expect to Hatch attempted to contact Mendenhall once after the attacks and was told the family wanted pri vacy Mendenhall called back and had a brief discussion with a staff member are only peripherally involved in this Barney said Springville Police Lt Dave Caron said he know any thing about the missing family but that they did not live in his town He said the department would become involved in the matter only if those who donated to the fund felt they had been swindled Caron said the tale seemed bizarre and he wondered about the absence of news stories from the hometown of the missing family members He said he want to accuse of fabricating the story but he did not understand his reticence reason to make this up is if he could get his hands on some money or get some time off work or get sympathy from the he said Mendenhall took about two weeks off after the attack Smith said he never attempted to draw from the pot of money collected in his name Animal rights group calls on LDS church to stop sponsoring hunts By CG WALLACE Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY
