Thursday, October 9, 2003 The Spectrum WORLD OBITUARIES Car bomb kills 6 in Colombia By CESAR GARCIA Associated Press BOGOTA, Colombia A car bomb exploded in central Bogota early Wednesday, killing six people and injuring at least 12, authorities said. The explosion occurred in a commercial area filled with electronic, clothing and liquor stores as employees were arriving for work. The goods sold in the San Andresito neighborhood are contraband and much cheaper than those found in legal shopping districts. Residents had alerted police to a suspicious Jeep in the neighborhood, police Gen. Jorge Daniel Castro told RCN Radio.

When police went to check it out, the bomb exploded, killing two officers, he said. Four civilians also were killed, and at least 12 were injured, Mayor Antanas Mockus told Caracol Radio. Teodora Lagos, a cleaning woman, was entering a nearby bank when she heard the explosion. "We all ran out, and looked Danny Darrel Hedlund Feb. 2, 1953 Oct.

Danny was known in town as Deli Dan. He owned and operated a franchise of Deli Dan Sandwiches to all of the surrounding convenience stores. A commander for the other side, however, said only three people had been killed in a battle outside the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif. It was impossible to verify either account. The fighting came as a deal was signed in the capital of Kabul between the Afghan government CO.

"I saw four dead people, including the woman who sells coffee here." Lagos, 31, was outraged by the attack.

"This violence must stop!" she said. "Why must innocent people die?" It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack. Police have recently reported that right-wing paramilitary groups have been muscling their way in to San Andresito and extorting vendors there. Leftist rebels fighting in Colombia's 39-year civil war have and the United Nations that paves the way for teams of U.N. and Afghan personnel to deploy to cities across Afghanistan to start a much-delayed program to disarm militiamen loyal to warlords.

Gen. Abdul Sabur, a spokesman for warlord Atta Mohammed's Jamiat-e-Islami faction, told The Associated Press by phone that hundreds of rival soldiers were massing around Mazar-e-Sharif. He said fighters loyal to northern Uzbek commander Abdul Rashid Dostum began battling Atta's supporters about midday, and the battle continued late into the night. Sabur said 60 people were killed in that fighting, which involved tanks, heavy artillery and also increasingly been bringing the war to the nation's cities. In February, members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, bombed an exclusive social club in the capital, killing 36 people and injuring 160 others.

The FARC was also blamed for an 1 attack on a nightclub in the city of Florencia in late September that killed 12 people and injured dozens of others. Colombia's long-simmering war pits the rebels against the government and the right-wing paramilitary fighters. About 3,500 people, mostly civilians, die in the war each year. other weapons. "The fighting is very intense," Sabur said.

"People are very scared. Shops and markets have all closed." A second Jamiat spokesman, Ashraf Nadim, said fighters loyal to Dostum launched a separate attack in Maimana city, in the neighboring northern province of Faryab. He said it was not clear how many people had been killed there. However, Syad Noorulla, one of Dostum's commanders, told AP that Atta's forces ambushed his troops about 30 miles west of Mazar-e-Sharif and killed three of his militiamen and wounded four. He said the situation was tense across the region, but that there Weather Sponsored by: WEATHER STORE HOURS Dillard's: SUN.

Earl Kenneth Sherratt WASHINGTON CITY Earl Kenneth Sherratt, 95, passed away on October 6, 2003 at his home in Washington City, Utah. Earl was born on May 30, 1908 at Cedar City, Utah to James Bulloch and Sarah Heyborne Sherratt.

At age 11, Earl left with his parents to live in Los Angeles, California. At age 19, Earl returned to Cedar City to become engaged to Halley Barton. They returned to Los Angeles and were married in a civil ceremony in Santa Ana, California on June 6, 1927. They later were sealed in the St. George Temple on October 26, 1950.

They remained faithful and active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the remainder of their lives. Earl held many different positions within the church, including Counselor in the Bishopric of the Yucaipa Ward, and served on three consecutive Stake Missions as President. His real love was that of Missionary Work. In 1968 Earl and Haley retired and 1 moved to Mantua, Utah where they were readily accepted into the community, and Earl served on the water district's board of directors. They moved to Washington, Utah in 1971 to be closer to their children and grandchildren, who were still liv- WORLD Rare colonial American coin found in Britain LONDON A 351-year-old coin, one of the first ever minted in colonial America, has been found in Britain, an auction house said Wednesday.

The rare New England silver sixpence turned up when relatives of a deceased British man were rummaging through his belongings. They sent it to an expert for identification. "It just came through the post in an unregistered envelope but when I opened it I recognized the sixpence straight away and my heart leapt. It is exceedingly rare and a very exciting find," said Rick Coleman, the senior valuer at Bonhams auctioneers. He said that the silver coin is about the size of a penny with "NE" for New England stamped on one side and "VI" on the other.

It is one of only nine New England silver sixpences known to exist, all minted in Boston in 1652. "This is the first coin to be struck in what is now the U.S., and the first coin to be struck in a British colony," said Robert W. Hoge, curator of American coins and currency at the American Numismatic Society in New York. Successive earthquakes rock northern Japan TOKYO Several strong earthquakes, included one of magnitude 6.3, shook Japan's northern island of Hokkaido on Wednesday and Thursday the latest since a powerful temblor injured more than 700 people less than two weeks ago. There were no immediate reports of major damage.

The most powerful of the quakes struck at 6:07 p.m. Wednesday just off the island's eastern coast, Japan's Meteorological Agency said. There was no danger of tsunami, a potentially dangerous ocean wave triggered by seismic activity, it said. "It shook a little." said Makoto Hara, a police spokesman in Nemuro, a city on the eastern coast of the island. "But it wasn't big enough to send things falling off shelves." ing in California.

After 61 years of marriage his wife, Halley, passed away on October 10, 1988. Earl later married his present wife, Barbara Horsley Wall, who is also a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They had been close friends in California and had remained so through the years. Barbara's husband passed away a few years previously. They were happily married for 14 years and both participated in a great many civil and church activities.

Earl was a successful business man. Among his accomplishments were, owner and operator of numerous businesses in the food industry and land development. He served on the Board of Directors of Southland National Bank located in Yucaipa, California. Earl is survived by his wife, Barbara Horsley Sherratt; his son, James Kenneth Sherratt; two daughters, Ranee Burtis and Marie McTeer; 18 grandchildren; 68 great grandchildren; and 35 great-great grandchildren. IN BRIEF was no other fighting. The two sides have clashed repeatedly in the past two years, though they are nominally both loyal to Karzai's central government. Countless efforts by the United Nations and the Afghan government to mediate a peaceful resolution have failed.

It was not clear what sparked the latest fighting. Disarming the tens of thousands of militiamen is essential if the Afghan government is to be able to build and deploy a national army to maintain security. It is also an important step if a NATOled peacekeeping mission is to expand to regions outside Kabul. However, convincing the warlords, many of whom are also provincial governors, to agree to surrender their weapons will be a major challenge. DEATH NOTICE Rex J.

11 case presses for testimony HAMBURG, Germany Lawyers for a Moroccan man accused of aiding the Hamburg cell of Sept. 11 hijackers appealed Wednesday for a court to press U.S. authorities for the testimony of top al-Qaida suspect Ramzi Binalshibh. Attorney Michael Rosenthal said that without the testimony of Binalshibh, a Yemeni believed to be the Hamburg cell's key contact person with Osama bin Laden's network, he could appeal to the European Court of Human Rights that his client Abdelghani Mzoudi is being denied a fair trial. The U.S.

Department of Justice rejected the court's request for Binalshibh's testimony in September. Rosenthal said he expected the United States to reject the petition again. Israeli reinforcements sent to Palestinian areas IDAHO WYO. Logan Ogden Salt Lake City NEV. Provo Richfield Moab COLO.

Over the weekend, the 74-yearold Arafat installed an emergency Cabinet his main objective apparently being to block Israeli action against him in reprisal for a suicide bombing by Palestinian militants.
