GEORGE No one is quite sure who started the charitable program, KONY Coins for Kids, but everyone seems to agree it does what it's intended to do: Provide Christmas cheer to needy children. Now in its 9th year, the charity solicits volunteers jo raise money, to shop, to wrap and to deliver Christmas toys and clothes to children under 16 in the Washington County area, KONY business manager Kerry Kimsey said. In 1998, the charity, administered by KONY radio, but run by a committee of volunteers, raised over $55,000 which benefited 1,120 children in more than 350 families. Kimsey said 40 people volunteered as Santa Clauses to deliver presents while several other helpers assisted with the operation. This year, volunteers will shop for toys and clothes on Dec.

16, then wrap the presents on Dec. 17 and distribute them beginning Dec. 18 and continue the work until the job is finished. Individuals who seek the assis "The Finest Quality Service with Dignity" Lloyd Harrison -Graveside Services: Nov. 27, 2 p.m., Logandale City Cemetery.

This year, the charitable program hopes to raise $60,000. KONY's efforts are part of an overall charitable program called "Families Helping Families" which includes WalMart, K-mart, Dixie Care and Share and the Elks Club.

Because KONY Coins for Kids has no paid staff or administrative expenses, Kimsey said all revenues go to help children in Washington County. ft a State Utah County family files wrongful death suit SALT LAKE CITY The parents of a man shot and killed by police last year have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against three officers. David Walker, 25, was shot Dec. 29 after an hour-long police chase through Utah County. Officials ruled the shooting was justified. Walker's parents filed the $500,000 suit Wednesday in 4th District Court against Orem Police Sgt.

Harold Peterson, Pleasant Grove police detective John Clayton and Pleasant Grove Officer B.J. Robinson. Peterson and Clayton said they believed Walker was turning a gun on them when they tried to arrest him in the front' yard of his parents' Utah County home. Walker was actually carrying a razor knife, but the officers said they thought they saw a pistol in his hands. Walker was shot twice in the chest and once in his right hip from a distance of about 35 feet.

The confrontation started when a distraught Walker called his parents and threatened to kill himself. The family called the police, but Walker led officers on a chase through the foothills of northeast Orem and finally to his parents' home near American Fork. "They murdered my son in our driveway in front of us," Debbie Walker said Wednesday. "My son was standing with a small two-inch blade at his own wrist. There's no way they could have mistaken it for a gun." Student association supports tuition hike LOGAN Utah State University's Executive Council of the Associated Students has voted to support a $3.9 million tuition hike to pay for faculty pay raises, but their support came with some strings attached.

The conditions for the council's support of a tuition hike which would increase costs for each student by about $300 for four years included a stipulation that their money -be used solely for faculty salaries, staff compensation or both, and for expanding the faculty. The student government also attached a provision Calling for the state to match every dollar generated by the tuition increase for the same purpose. And the students stipulated that rANNOUNCING!
