Friday, August 5, 2005 The Spectrum OBITUARIES NATION Rescue workers dig for man missing in mine collapse; one miner killed By ROGER ALFORD Associated Press CUMBERLAND, Ky. A roof collapse at a Kentucky coal mine killed one miner Thursday, and rescue crews spent most of the day digging through a wall of rocks in search of another miner who was presumed dead. "There has been no communication, no visible evidence that this miner is alive," said Holly McCoy-Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing. A section of mine roof 20 feet wide, 20 feet long and 11 feet high collapsed on the workers late Wednesday, said Paris Charles, executive director of the Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing. The miners were part of a crew of about eight men who were performing retreat mining a dangerous process of removing coal pillars that support the roof.

Two rescue workers were injured in the search for the second miner both by falling rocks. Authorities haven't released the names of the miners, but Travis Wilder said his 23-yearold brother Brandon Wilder died in the collapse. Brandon Wilder and his wife, Kimberly, have a 2-year-old daughter, and were expecting a second child in December, said Tyler Halcomb, another brother. MORTUATO 170 S. Mall Dr.

Mission managers could not guarantee that a piece of the blanket won't rip off during reentry and slam into the spacecraft, but they said the chance of that happening was remote and that it would be riskier to try to fix the problem. NASA had been considering sending the astronauts out to snip away part of the blanket for fear a 13-inch section weighing just under an ounce could tear away during the latter stages of descent and strike the shuttle, perhaps causing grave danger. Wind-tunnel tests hurriedly conducted in California on real thermal blanket samples showed it is possible tiny pieces of the fabric might shred off, Hale said. In the worst situation, he noted, there is a 1.5 percent chance that the entire 13-inch section would come off and hit the shuttle.
