Friday, September 2, 2005 The Spectrum OBITUARIES NATION NATION IN BRIEF Prosecutors drop charges against MCI NEW YORK Federal prosecutors said Thursday they will not prosecute MCI, the postbankruptcy version of WorldCom, for the $11 billion fraud carried out at the telecommunications firm. Manhattan U.S. Attorney David Kelley said MCI has fired virtually every employee who "played even a tangential role" in the fraud, which came to light three years ago. "The public interest has been sufficiently vindicated by the successful criminal prosecution of the principal criminal wrongdoers Bernard Ebbers and Scott Sullivan," Kelley's office said in a statement. The strike by more than 18,000 assembly workers at 1:01 a.m. MDT today means Boeing will stop building commercial airplanes, and comes at a time when new orders had picked up in recent months. Union members voted 86 percent in favor of a strike beginning at 1:01 a.m. MDT today. Under union rules, the contract would have been automatically ratified and workers would have stayed on the job unless two-thirds of the union members voted to strike.

As one of the nation's largest U.S. Muslim groups prepares for its annual meeting in the Chicago area, its leader is working to contain forces both inside and outside the community that would steer it away from the American mainstream. Sayyid Syeed, secretary general of the Islamic Society of North America, said efforts to help Muslims gain broader acceptance will be a focus at the gathering, which starts Friday and is expected to draw about 40,000 Muslims from around the country. Muslims worldwide have been under renewed pressure to distance themselves from extremists after a summer of deadly terrorist attacks in Britain and Egypt, and insurgent assaults on civilians and coalition troops in Iraq. The Islamic Society, based in Plainfield, has joined other Muslims in repeatedly denouncing terrorism, yet suspicion of the community persists.

Syeed compared the plight of American Muslims to that of other immigrant religious groups, including Jews and Roman Catholics, who faced discrimination when they arrived in the United States. "It was a great achievement." Syeed, a native of Kashmir who is now a U.S. citizen, has asked President Bush to show his support for the community by attending the convention, which runs through Labor Day.

Syeed said it would send "a powerful message to the Muslim. world and the world at large that America's fight is not against Islam." The Bush administration will be represented by presidential adviser Karen Hughes, who was recently confirmed as Bush's chief ambassador to the Muslim world.
