He married Dayle Stevens Between proves Dinah Eng Gannett News Service sister Linda and I -tal arrived at emergency the hospi- room at 2 a.m. She felt nauseous with a dull ache in her side that had grown progressively worse that evening.

Little did we know how long it would take to receive care. As a teenager, I used to work in a hospital emergency room as a volunteer, so I know that cases are evaluated, and patients are seen according to how serious their problems might be. I never realized how quickly the ER can fill up on a Friday night, and how few medical personnel are on duty after midnight. It took an hour before my sister was registered, and the paperwork signed. And it took an additional two and a half hours before she was taken back to a treatment room and seen by a nurse.

We live in a society of instant gratification, and having to wait when you, or a loved one, is in pain is not easy. Sitting in an ER for hours makes you grateful for every moment of pain-free health. People's values come to the surface quickly. At one point, everyone had to listen to an elderly man coughing up a storm. No one wanted to sit near him, but when he asked for help getting to the bathroom, two people immediately moved to aid him.

When conditions are less than ideal, you have to come up with makeshift solutions. My sister said lying down would ease her pain, but ER policy dictated that all patients remain seated in the waiting area until they were called in for treatment. Improvising, I shoved three chairs together in a corner of the room so that she could at least get horizontal. Unfortunately, she was right underneath the waiting room TV set, which was blaring with "Judge a courtroom reality show that was turning my stomach. When I switched the channel, looking for quieter, Duncan Esplin Stewart May 7th, 1960.

CEDAR CITY Stewart 80th Velma Stewart celebrated her 80th birthday on Monday January 14, 2008. She was born January 14, 1928 in Fairview, to Willis and Bessie Mower.

She married Owen Stewart on August 7, 1946 in Fairview. They were later sealed in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on March 23, 1963. They have 5 children Sharon Clarke, Karen Rugg, JoAnn Adams, Elaine North, Janice Steffensen 22 grandchildren 35 great grandchildren, with 3 on the way. The family held a birthday party in her honor. Velma enjoys cooking, reading and spending time with her family.

Us: ER wait challenging calmer fare, a man who I had thought was asleep yelled out, "What are you doing, lady? I'm watching that." Muttering an apology, I turned the set back to squabbling neighbors and the loud-mouthed judge, but turned it down a bit. A woman in another corner, who couldn't even see the TV set, piped up, "I can't hear it!" So I turned the volume back up, and sat down, overruled. I reminded myself that these other people were in pain, or also worried over loved ones. So if the familiar sound of "Judge Mathis," which was then followed by "The People's Court," was a source of comfort, who was I to judge them? An hour later, when the two avid watchers left the room, I got up and turned off the TV. Blessed silence.

Half an hour later, we were taken back to a treatment room. The shift changed, and we waited some more. As Linda dozed on and off, I got up, stiff from sitting through the night, and started to do some yoga stretches. In the relative peace of the moment, I felt certain she would be fine. It was after 7 a.m.

before a doctor arrived. After getting X-rays, an ultrasound, and blood work, my sister was finally given some pain medication and we checked out two hours later. Thankfully, all her tests came out normal. The cause of the pain was not found, so she'll have to go to a specialist for a follow-up appointment. After being up all night, my mind was awake, even though my body was ready to fall asleep.

Now that the emergency was over, I told Linda we should pretend that we'd flown to Paris, and were just jetlagged after a seven-hour flight. Now that's a healing thought. Nag less: Nagging less falls into the "Easier said than done" category, but is well worth the effort. I resolved to follow my own advice and am much happier and calmer as a result. Of course, so is everyone else in my family. Yes, I still remind my son about what he needs to do, but I do it with a smile as often as I can. How will you know when your guidance and teaching has transmorphed into nagging? When your child's eyes glaze over and her attention is elsewhere.

Choose your battles wisely: The older I get, the more I realize the veracity of this saying. Not fighting over issues or behaviors that have little lasting importance leaves you the energy to focus on what truly impacts your child. Just as with nagging, if you constantly battle with your children, they will tune you out. A good rule of thumb to choose your battles is this: will the incident still matter in a few days?
