GEORGE The Pine View Panthers found the going a little rough against the Kanab Cowboys, but managed to come away with a 5-2 victory anyway Wednesday. Junior pitcher Jim Price threw a splendid game for the Panthers, and went seven innings to improve his record to 3-1 on the year. Price gave up just seven hits, and struck out 13 batters. Both teams had trouble putting runs on the board, and by the fourth inning it was tied at 2-2.

But Pine View rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a single, walk, and three straight hits, according to coach Bill Jacobsen. The win improves the Panthers to 4-1 in league play, which is good enough for a half -game lead over Dixie and Cedar for first place. Pine View travels to Parowan Friday for a league game beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Panthers roughed up the Rams 15-5 earlier in the season, and a victory will keep PV atop the conference. the first time since 1976-77 season as Karl revived sagging franchise.

"(The collision) devastated the club," said Oakland designated hitter Reggie Jackson. "I've never seen that many defensive changes on one play in one game. "It's the worst collision I've seen. I bad one once with Paul Blair (while with the Yankees). But both of us walked off the field, although it was an inside-the-park home run.

Davis was out cold for three minutes. It's too bad, too bad for us." The Athletics were already short one outfielder with Jose Conseco in a Bay Area hospital with the flu. The club was also missing infielder Carney Lansford, who left in the third inning suffering from a cold. After the collision, the ball rolled to the wall and Pettis scored easily to complete an inside-the-park home run. Said Oakland Manager Tony La-Russa: "(Davis) didn't remember anything.

We think Mike's head hit Murph's knee. There was a little blood. Mike called me "That was really scary. The ball was in the gap, the sun was blinding. You know those guys, they're tough as nails.

They wouldn't let up on the ball." After Murphy and Davis left, La-Russa shifted rookie Mark McGwire from first base to right field, Stan Javier from left to center, Tony Phil-hps from second base to left and Mike Galiego from third to second. Reached Wednesday night in Arizona, where he had flown to meet with officials of the Phoenix Suns, Pitino said, "The first people that would hear about me leaving are my team." The former Knicks assistant coach under Hubie Brown, confirmed he met with Madison Square Garden President Richard Evans Tuesday. "There will be no more meetings," Pitino said. "Everything now is in the hands of my agent, Gary Wi-chard.

The next step will be if they offer me a contract and then whether I decide to sign it." Pitino said during a PC rally recently that was leaning toward staying with the school and building up its reputation, but he also has said he's concerned about his family's financial well-being. The foundering Knicks have the worst record in the league over the past three years at 71-175. The stage was set for Pitino on Monday, when Evans fired interim coach Bob Hill and general manager Scotty Stirling. Pitino would become the 14th coach in the Knicks' 41-year history and the third in the past six months. PROVIDENCE, R.I.

(UPI) Providence College coach Rick Pitino, who took the upstart Friars to the NCAA Final Four this year, has reached a tentative agreement to coach the New York Knicks, a published report said today. "Rick Pitino will be the next Knicks coach that much I know," an unnamed source close to Madison Square Garden told the Providence Journal-Bulletin. "The deal has been arranged. He wants them, and they want him." Pitino, 34, reached a tentative agreement Tuesday night on a five-year deal that could be worth as much as $3.2 million, the Journal reported. The contract offer is said to include incentives for making the playoffs and other perks, including an interest-free home loan and money to pay for private-school education for his three sons.

Sources told the Journal the final details of the deal must be ironed out, including whether Pitino will also become director of player of personnel. The popular Pitino, who transformed a lackluster team and captured trie city's imagination in just two years, had been offered a new five-year contract to replace his old four-year pact at PC, where he was making an estimated $200,000.
