The Spectrum Saturday, May 6, 2000 A5 ESL graduates encouraged to learn from failures, value importance of language For The Spectrum ST. GEORGE Language gives people knowledge and is the equalizer in education, Xochitl Cuara, an AmeriCorps-VISTA member at the Volunteer Center of Washington County, told nearly 40 graduates of the English As A Second Language Program at Dixie College. Cuara works to identify re sources and translate information for the estimated 2,000 Hispanic families in the St George area. On Wednesday, in the Browning Auditorium, the bilingual, bi-cul-tural young mother encouraged graduating men, women and young people in the ESL Class of 2000 to continue to develop their English language skills, noting the advantages of being bilingual. Brian Cheesman, Director of the Dixie College Adult Education Program, also took part in the ceremony, which included the presentation of certificates of graduation, participation and recognition.

In remarks before students, families and friends, he told graduates to "learn from your failures, turn them into successes go further, reach higher and make your life all it can be!" Following the speeches and cere- OBITUARIES monies, graduates were honored at a potluck dinner, including dessert and a traditional Mexican pifiata. The evening was coordinated by Theresa Wright and hosted by members and volunteers of the AmeriCorps Southern Utah Literacy Program, in association with the Continuing Education Department. Teachers Cesar Florez, Becky Harris, Tim Strobel, Becky Reis and Matt Sellers took part in the festivities, as did most of the AmeriCorps members and volunteers who helped graduates develop and strengthen their language skills over the past several months. The programs of the Dixie College Adult Education Department, including Adult High School, Adult Basic Skills, ESL and the Southern Utah Literacy Project recruit volunteer staff to improve literacy skills in spelling. math and new workforce computer technology to increase employment longevity in under-educated adults.

Following a summer break, adult education programs will resume on Aug. 22. For more information on English As A Second Language or any of the programs of Dixie College Adult Education, call 652-7728.
