Sports Digest BASKETBALL: Starzz place Mulitauaopele on injured list SALT LAKE CITY The Utah Starzz placed reserve forward Naomi Mulitauaopele on the injured list Thursday with a bruised knee ligament, then filled her roster spot with Kym Hope. The 6-foot-3 Mulitauaopele was hurt in a July 15 game at Sacramento.

Hope, a 6-2, 170-pound post player, was the last player cut from the preseason roster of the Orlando Miracle. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Boise State named pre-season favorite BOISE, Idaho Defending Big West champion and Humanitarian Bowl winner Boise State was named Thursday in news media and coaches polls as this season's leage favorite. During voting at the Big West's annual media day, the Broncos received 26 of 29 first-place votes cast by reporters and five of six first-place votes from coaches. Boise State coach Dirk Koetter said he was honored to have his team listed first in both polls. However, he doesn't plan to let the Broncos get overconfident.

"One of our goals for this team is to take the approach of the hunter," Koetter said. "We can't allow ourselves to listen to people who tell us we're, the New Mexico State received two first-place votes and Idaho had one in the news media poll, and the Aggies were narrowly favored for second place over the Vandals. Utah State was picked fourth by the reporters, followed by Arkansas State and North Texas. In the coaches poll Boise State was followed by Idaho, which was listed first on the only other ballot that didn't pick the Broncos as the team to beat. The Vandals were picked to finish second by the coaches, followed by New Mexico State, Arkansas State, North Texas and Utah State.

The 2000 season marks the end of football in the Big West. Several California schools that compete in basketball and other sports will make the Big West a non-football league in 2001. Boise State, meanwhile, will join the Western Athletic Conference in 2001. Idaho, New Mexico State, Arkansas State and North Texas are going to the Sun Belt and Utah State will become an independent. Utah State coach Mick Dennehy, who takes over in Logan after leaving perennial Division I-AA power Montana, said he wasn't surprised by results of the voting.

"We will do everything we can to prove them wrong," Dennehy said. "Polls are speculative and don't mean much to me. They get people talking and we can use this as incentive."
