Mary Phoenix ST. GEORGE Mary Morris Phoenix, 82, passed away Dec. 22, 1998 at the St. George Care Center. She was born June 2, 1916 in St.

George to Morton and Mollie Lund Morris. She married John J. Phoenix, Jr. in St. George.

He preceded her in death. Mary was reared and educated in St. George, graduating from Dixie High School and Dixie Jr. College. She also attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, Stanford in Berkeley, Calif.

and the University of Utah. She received a degree in history and English. Her intent was to pursue a law degree after receiving a degree in elementary education. She taught school for a short time in St. George and later married Jack Phoenix, a well-known Standard Oil distributor.

Together they raised their family in St. George. After Jack died, Mary continued her school teaching endeavors. She taught English and drama at Dixie High School until retirement. Mary had a special talent reaching those students who needed special consideration.

Mary had been very active in community and public affairs. She was co-chairman with Ellis Pickett of the St. George Centennial, past president Ladies of Elks, Rotary Anns, Lady Lions, and 1st president of Alice Louise Reynolds Club. She later took an instrumental part i in the Red Hills Readers, where she wrote and directed many scripts for their productions. She was also responsible for the Tuesday night programs at the St.

George Tabernacle for many years. Mary was a literary enthusiast. She wrote many pageants and a weekly newspaper column, "Dixie Diary," in the Spectrum for many years. She loved history, particularly the pioneer heritage of St. George and Southern Utah.

She was considered an authority on Southern Utah history. Mary was a recipient of many awards and was Outstanding Woman of the Year for: BPW, Chamber of Commerce, BPOE, Rotary, and recognized many times for her outstanding service to the arts and education. She was one of a kind and had a special way of making people feel good. She was a good Democrat, intelligent, entertaining, friendly and kind. She loved all her students and will be dearly missed by friends and family, She is survived by her son, John Phoenix of Las Vegas, sister-inlaw, Jean Morris of Bakersfield, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Bill and brother, Robert Morris. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 28, 1998 at 2 p.m. at the Spilsbury Beard Mortuary, 110 South Bluff, in St. George.

Home Health and Gracie's Home Health. She also had a licensed daycare in her home. Elaine was converted to the LDS Church in 1962. She was an active member and served in cub scouting for many years. She lived in Las Vegas from 1962 to 1977 and then moved to Hurricane.

Elaine loved the ocean and watching the sunset. She especially loved the Balboa Peninsula. She loved Zion National Park, walking the trails and watching the leaves change. She loved the Native American Indians, and had a special fondness for the Rose Bud Sioux. She spent many countless hours of missionary work among them.

Elaine was very compassionate and had a special love for everyone, especially the elderly. She is survived by seven children: Debra Ann (David Clark) Campbell and Willa (Andy) LeBaron, both of Hurricane, Shirley (David) Nilsen of Boulder City, Peggy (David) Poulsen, and James (Celesta) Gunter, both of Hurricane, Robert (Shannon) Gunter of Santa Clara, David Alexander Gunter and Michael Lee Gunter, all of Hurricane; beloved friend, James Everett Gunter of Hurricane; 26 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; parents: Ether and Charles Nelson of Richfield; two brothers: Dean Williams of Medford, and Alan Williams of Gunnison; two sisters: Carol (Stanley) Hornbeck of Las Vegas, and Donna Bradshaw of St. George. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 28, 1998 at 11 a.m.

at Hurricane 3rd Ward Chapel, 677 South 700 West. Dorothea Slack SNOWFLAKE, Ariz. Dorothea Rasmuson Slack of Huntington, W.V., passed away Dec. 22, 1998 in Snowflake Ariz. She 1 was born Sept. 2, 1923, in Provo to Nils Gunnar and Lydian Leona West Rasmuson.

She married Kenneth Slack, Dec. 20, 1946, in the Logan LDS Temple. Dorothea is survived by her husband and seven children: Kenneth R. Slack of Humble, Texas, Nils H. Slack of Proctorville, Ohio, Corwin R.

Since Nov. 1, Davis County has had seven reported suicides, Weber County has had four and Salt Lake County 20. Davis and Weber counties normal- worked in the Castleton Mines. In 1979 they moved to Henderson, where he worked as a barber for 25 years before moving to Hurricane.

Jim helped his wife with her garden. Together they planted 100 tomatoes every year and gave the entire crop away. Jim was physically fit and always took care of his body. He rodeoed up until the late 1970s. He was a calf roper and team roper.

Jim has always been a cowboy and loved rodeos, horses and horse racing. Because of his great health he was able to ride until just a short time before his death. Jim was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was a true gentleman with high ethics and integrity. He had a pure heart and was very spiritual.

Jim was an active member of the LDS church. He served in the bishopric in Panaca and Henderson. He loved working with the youth and faithfully attended the temple. Survivors include: wife, Isadora Price of Hurricane; five children: James Gary (Hattie) Price and Derrill S. (Charlene) Price, both of Henderson, Judy (Rowland) Hinton of Hurricane, Richard (Helen) Price of Henderson, Nev.

and Mary (Ralph) Wilde of Las Vegas, brother, Preston R. (Lucille) Price of Cedar City; two sisters: Jane McAllister of Salem and Ramona Foster of Panaca, Nev. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Buelah Staheli, Addie Backman, Rena Fisher and Marjorie Price; brothers: Grant Price, Mason Price and Lewis Price; granddaughters: Audrey Price Burns and Mary Kaye Price. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998 at noon in the Hurricane 3rd Ward Chapel, 677 South 700 West.

She had a wonderful singing voice and won the Metropolitan Opera auditions in Los Angeles in 1947, but chose to concentrate her abilities in raising her family and serving in community and church. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in many leadership positions throughout her life, including Relief Society president, bicentennial chairman, Primary teacher, ward, stake and regional choir director. She was the first public affairs director in the Charleston West Virginia Stake.

While living in Laie, Hawaii, she was editor of the Laie Hui Lau Lima community newspaper and was president of the Kahuku High School PTA. She was on the PTA Board of Governors and successfully lobbied before the Hawaiian legislature for free bus transportation. She was a wonderful support and companion to her husband, Dr. Kenneth T. Slack, former director of libraries at Marshall University, presently serving as the Civil War Special Collections Curator.

After raising her family, she completed her bachelor's degree from Marshall University. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 26 at the LDS Toquerville Utah Ward at 1 p.m., preceded by the viewing from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interment will I be in the Toquerville City Cemetery.

A memorial service in Huntington, W.V., will be held at a later date. James Price HURRICANE James Grandison Price, 86, passed away Dec. 21, 1998 at the Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George. He was born Nov.

8, 1912 in Enterprise to Joseph Adelbert "Bert" and Dora Belle Rencher Price. He married Isadora Chadburn April 9, 1934. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple. Jim was reared and educated in Enterprise.

He worked on the family ranch in Modena and Grass Valley and later worked for Rass Gardner in Pine Valley.
