Page 64 The Spectrum Lifestyles Thursday, June 6, 1996 Finding comfort in knowing that sometimes love lasts Man likes to of how good give reminders a friend he is will have been married for 50 years. How do people do that? How can a man and a woman (two entirety different entities) share a bed, a home and a life for half a century and still maintain even a semblance of sanity? People change as they grow older. It's not just our physical appearance that changes. The joys and sorrows of life force us to periodically readjust our attitudes and temperaments. Even our basic belief systems and value structures can undergo radical re-evaluation from time to time.

Theoretically, the person you are married to today only bears a resemblance to the person you promised to love, honor and cherish way back when. So, how can it be that this person, so different from the person you initially fell in love with, is still the one who floats your boat? It's difficult for me to imagine my, folks as young lovers, yet I know this was the case. When I drink and a big yellow Valium. I love my parents, but My lead-footed father had put the pedal to the metal, keeping the accelerator rocking steady between 45 and 50, in a 65 mph zone. Bits and pieces of my parent's conversation drifted back to me along with the air conditioning, which my dad kept turning off and my mom kept turning back on.

I either roasted or froze, there was no middle ground here. My folks have their own way of communicating. Their dialogue consists of short bursts of unfinished sentences, during which they trade the occasional snipe, bite, scratch and hiss. After a few volleys Dad was agitated and Mom was exasperated. I sat in the back seat counting out of state license plates mentally willing the car to move faster.

I wasn't remotely concerned about their barbs and jabs. I knew they were meaningless. My parents love each other, but Before the year ends my folks T1 I he whole family hadn't gathered in a long time, so on my dad's 74th birthday iwe decided to get together for a 'nice meal. Since the restaurant was a dis tance away, we made a caravan of our cars. I ended up riding with my parents.

It was just like old times. Dad drove. Mom rode shotgun, I sat behind them, feeling like I was 8 again. It took all I could Christina Ferchalk Ferchalk do to keep from kicking the back of their seat. The trip took only about a half-hour but it felt like it lasted much longer than that.

I had really been looking forward to the meal but by the time we got to the restaurant what I really wanted was a stiff was a kid I secretly read the letters Dad wrote to Mom during World War II. There was some hot and heavy emotion going on. A few years ago, when Dad was having heart surgery. I watched as Mom haunted the waiting area of the intensive care. I had always known she loved my dad, but it wasn't until then that I realized this woman deeply loves this man.

Last summer it was Dad's turn to wait while Mom had surgery. I saw him thrown into the same emotional crisis. Their love is a form of co-dependency. The two of them function as a single unit. They are lost without each other.

I take comfort knowing that after all these years my parents' love affair remains intact. All the same, from now on I drive my own car! Christina. At least you'll never have to worry about Paul's memory. He can remind the elephants. DearAbby: Tell "Frustrated in New Jersey" that she shouldn't have to "swallow" anything. Here's how I handled the bridesmaid thing with a bride-to-be who gave the ring back to her fiance three times. With these bad vibes in mind.

I asked the bride to sign an agreement, with a post-dated (the date of the wedding) check so if the wedding didn't take place, I could cash the check (for the dress only $180) and she would get the dress. She agreed. Yes, she did marry the groom and I returned her check. I did this because I already own two dresses, two purses and two pairs of shoes (never worn) costing a grand total of $530. This time.

I covered my bases. Tampa Bridesmaid Abigail Van Buren is a syndicated columnist. The opinions expressed are the writer's and do not necessarily represent those of The Spectrum. in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Of.

i I DearAbby: I have been friends with a certain gentleman for 45 years. I'll call him "Paul." I had been very friendly with his wife, who passed away eight years ago. She was a good-hearted soul and I thanked her for everything she ever did for me or gave me. There was only one problem. She never stopped Abigail Van Buren Dear Abby reminding me of what she had given me.

Now Paul Is doing the same thing! Six years ago, he gave me a basket of artificial flowers for Easter and told me he had paid $35 for it. Every time he saw me after that, he asked me if I was enjoying the flowers that he paid $35 for. Paul also sent me a Christmas card that played "Silent Night" when you opened it Abby, would you believe that in July he asked me if the Christmas card he gave me was still playing "Silent Abby, what on earth is this man's problem?
