Color Country Spectrum. Tuesday, December27, 1977 3 From Escalante desert BLM crew rescues teenagers a I it 7 way to meet Larry Chynoweth. Maintainance, with equipment Larry needed for work he was doing on 50-Mile Bench, came upon two cold, scared, disoriented, cut and bruised boys who had wandered onto the Hole-in-the-Rock Road. Larry, on his way to meet Harvey, found two others in the same condition. Although the boys had maps, they had no idea where they were.

The four ere taken to theBLMoffice where they washed and warmed until their leaders were located in a local cafe where they were eating. This was the first alert that anything was amiss. Craig Zufelt, Area Manager. notified the sheriff who activated his East Garfield Unit of the Sheriff's Jeep Posse to commence a search for the five boys still out. They were augmented by a National Hark Service plane.

Harvey Gates, Don Coleman. Range Use Supervisor, and Arnold Button, rancher BLM permittee, on horses, searched where the jeeps could not go. Friday afternoon, December 16. the National Park Service plane spotted three of the hikers coming out of rugged Scorpion Gulch. Food and sleeping bags were dropped to Harvey, Don and Arnold, who were in the area on horseback, and they were directed by radio to the boys.

Spending the night there, they were able to get in to Escalante with the boys by early Saturday afternoon. The teenagers were out of food and were drinking water from pockets in the rocks. After dusk Friday, the NPS plane, making a final sweep before returning to base in Page. Arizona, spotted a campfire about 35 miles southeast of Escalante, where the remaining two boys were huddled. The jeep posse was able to get to them and bring them out.

Craig Zufelt said glumly, "Some of these days, we're eoing to bring out a body. CEDAR C1TY-A BLM Crew in Escalante has again been instrumental in rescuing unprepared and inexperienced city-dwelling teenagers from the rigors of wild and rugged terrain southeast Escalante. Nine boys 14 to 18 years of age and five leaders from a correctional institution in Denver had been hiking in the Escalante desert since December. 5. After a week all together, the boys went out in small groups in a "make-it-on-your-own" situation, ostensibly to develop self-reliance a "rehabilitation" exercise.

On December 15, Harvey Gates, Natural Resource Specialist, on his Commerce Department Satelite photo shows a band of mid level clouds in the central Gulf of Mexico crossing the southern tip of Florida. A band of layered clouds stretches from the Eastern Great Lakes southward to Tennessee, and lies along and ahead of a surface trough.
