4 Spectrum Wednesday. January 16. 1991 Hofmann moved to special area of state prison POINT OF THE MOUNTAIN, Utah (AP) Admitted pipe-bomb killer and forger Mark W. Hofmann has been moved from maximum security to the Special Services Dormitory for treatment of depression, a Utah State Prison official said. The move will allow Hofmann to take part in mental health programs offered only to residents of the Special Services Dormitory, said Gerald Cook, director of institutional operations at the prison.

The dormitory also offers more privileges and freedom of movement than the maximum security unit where he was housed. Hofmann was sentenced to life in prison in 1987 for the bombing deaths of Steven F. Christensen and Kathleen Sheets. Hofmann later said he killed Christensen, with whom he had had document dealings, to keep a fraudulent documents scam from being uncovered. He said he left the other bomb at the home of Christensen's former business associate, Gary Sheets, to divert attention from documents.

The bomb killed Sheets' wife. Prison officials said Hofmann attempted suicide on Sept. 15, 1988, and again last Aug. 22 by taking overdoses of antidepressant medications. Following the last attempt, Hofmann forger was kept for observation in the prison infirmary.

The move would not have been possible without an administrative override because Hofmann's classification under the prison system would keep him in maximum security. "What we say is that we are treating him like any other inmate based on need and space." The Special Services Dormitory "is less secure in that it is dormitory with rooms and the individuals and not locked down. It isn't as much locks and chains but more monitoring individuals by staff," Cook said.

Cook said Hofmann is not considered violent or prone to escape. "In terms of physical violence and escape, he isn a threat. But he is a bright individual and if someone could manipulate circumstances, he is one that could be put into that category," Cook said. Cook said Hofmann will continue to be monitored and if he is not benefiting from the program or if he refuses to take part he will be moved out of the Special Services Dormitory. Willie Norris Griffith, 34, who also has used the names Ron Ray Griffith and Ronnie Norris, was arrested Friday at his father-in-law's home by U.S. marshals, Utah Public Safety officers and an officer from Florida. Florida state law enforcement spokesman Tal Whiddon said Griffith has been living in Utah for a number of years under an assumed name and is on Florida's 10 Most Wanted list.
