Spectrum FaU Sports Sunday, August 22, 1M2 37 Virgin Valley thin on line fmS. I 1 by STAN MURRAY Sports Editor MESQUITE, Nev. Last year the Virgin Valley Bulldogs had so much talent they virtually waltzed through their schedule, with the exception of one loss to non-league foe Kanab, and grabbed the Nevada A football title with a rout over Carlin. The Bulldogs had a 10-1 record at season's end. But this year the waltz may turn into more of a slow fox trot for the Bulldogs who lost almost the entire starting squad to graduation, including 10 all-state players.

Among the losses were four of the five starting linemen. Only all-stater Rod Jensen will be returning to his tackle spot. But still, to be around Virgin Valley sports is to be around a winning tradition and a few slim numbers isn't something to really fret about. "We're a lot smaller on the line than we were last year We're really thin," Head Coach Evan Wilson said. "It'li take a team effort from all the kids.

It will take all 11 playing together. Last year we were all-state from tackle io tackle." This year the line will be relatively inexperienced with Jensen, 6-foot-l, 180-pounds, as the only player returning with a lot of time on the field last year. Joining him will be Quint Hughes at center, Melvin Mull at guard and Eric Wittwer at the other tackle. The other guard spot could be fought for by Kenny Reber, Bik Lee and Dirk Jeffs. The Bulldogs set a national high school record for fumble recoveries with 28 last season I' v- vj I' MS Jl-y I I i I YA Jy I I -A According to Wilson, who has won three state championships as the coach at Virgin Valley while amassing a 61-14 record in eight years there and a career record of 79-24, the battle for the quarterback position is wide open.

The battle is being drawn between Scott Brotherson who was the junior varsity quarterback last season and Scott Lee who was the backup quarterback and also the wing-back last season. At the running back spots will be Kraig Hafen who as sophomore had 312 yards against Boulder City in a junior varsity game last season. David Angel, 5-9, 155 will also be at a running back spot. At the reciever spot will be Scott Hardy who started six games last year. Hardy has fine speed an shown this spring when he took four firsts in the state track meet.

In looking at this year's schedule Wilson sees Milford and Pahrump as the two toughest teams on the schedule and felt Lincoln County should be the team to beat in the league. One interesting side note from last year's team at Virgin Valley. The Bulldogs set a national high school record for fumble recoveries with 28 last season. The old record of 21 was held by Jefferson City, Missouri. MESQUITE, NEV.

Receiver Scott Hardy will be one of the top people on offense for the Bulldogs this season. Hardy has excellent speed and good hands and was one of the top track people in the state last year. MESQUITE, Nev. Rod Jensen will return at tackle for Virgin Valley this year. He is the only starting lineman returning for the Bulldogs.

Every starting lineman made All-State last year at Virgin Valley. EH The New Astroturf Shoe!
