"I'm going to tell you the same thing I told my team today," Lewis said. "We're not through. We've got plenty of games yet to win, and I'm going to coach these guys as hard as I can coach right up to the last game. I am not sad here.

I'm not leaving with sadness." Lewis said he decided to make the announcement Tuesday so the search for a new coach could get underway and have as little effect on recruiting as possible. "I think the worst thing that could've happened to us in recruiting was for me to wait to the last game," Lewis said. "That would be about eight or nine days before the signing date. Then with me announcing that I was stepping down, they'd have to give three or four weeks to get a committee together to talk about a coach, cruiting that it would really hurt. "Now, they'll be some negative things in this about recruiting, but at least we've got time to let everybody know what's happened and that the program is going on.

We'll have a new coach in here, and he's going to do a good job whoever he is. I really think it's better to do it now than wait." Ford said Chancellor Richard Van Horn would appoint a search committee in the "next few days and a successor will be selected at the earliest opportunity." Lewis said his decision was not affected by the school losing 7-foot Tito Horford because of two recruiting violations. "I had already told my family, regardless of the Tito thing, this was my last year," he said. "Now it is a disappointment. I wished he was going to be here for the Cougars of the future." "I'm very satisfied.

I'm looking forward to whatever happens in the future." EH who has decided that 33 years of coaching is enough, wants to be remembered as more than just the coach who took the Houston Cougars to the NCAA Final Four five times, losing one national championship game at the buzzer. "Not for the wins or losses, but that every team we've put on the floor was a hustling, aggressive outfit," Lewis said Tuesday after announcing he would retire at the end of the season. "If there was ever a trademark I thought Guy Lewis teams had, that they hustled all the way. That's how I'd like to be remembered." Lewis, though, will be remembered for much more. Even though he never won a national title, he guided the Cougars to 26 straight winning seasons, 14 NCAA appearances and five trips to the Final Four.

The 63-year-old Lewis also will be remembered for the stunning 71-69 victory over UCLA in the "Game of the Century" on Jan. 20, 1968. The tri also was the first nationally televised regular-season college basketball game, Houston's Elvin Hayes out-scored Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) 39-15. Lewis might also be remembered for the 1983 NCAA finals in which the Cougars were beaten by North Carolina State on a last-season dunk. "I went in to see Tom (Ford, Houston athletic director) last week and told him I felt like 30 years as head coach, 33 years of coaching at the University of Houston was enough," Lewis said.

"I never intended to coach. I thought I was going to be a pilot for the rest of my life. It didn't work out that way. "I love this university. I never thought of this as a job.

This has always been to me just a crusade, really, to build this thing into a great basketball program." Lewis has done that. (UPI) A proposal to change the governing structure of the NAIA is to be presented by the body's Council of Presidents for a vote at the association's annual meeting in March, it was announced Tuesday.

The new structure would give the council three responsibilities currently held by the NAIA National Executive Committee: the continuing review and evaluation of academic standards; the budget and all fiscal matters of the association; and the employemnt and supervision of the executive director. The association last year voted to change from a representative assembly as a ruling body to a system of one-school-one-vote with the chief executive officer of each member institution responsible for casting or assigning that vote. The new proposal is an attempt to continue the effort to have chief executive officers more involved in NAIA affairs. The Council of Presidents is composed of chief executive officers from each of the 32 NAIA districts elected by colleagues from that district. The council meets twice a year with a five-member administrative commitee acting between meetings.

Dunbar took Garrison out of her hard-charging net game, limiting the Texan to a baseline game the entire match. "I couldn't let her get to the net," Dunbar said.

"I don't think she can stay back with me. "If she does (stay back on the baseline), she tends to make a lot of errors because she hits the ball so flat. The 20-year-old native of the Dominican Republic, who was banned from Houston by the NCAA and told to leave Louisiana State for cutting practice, registered Tuesday at the University of Miami, then was introduced at a crowded late afternoon news conference on the Coral Gables campus. "This is the first time I feel like I'm alive," Horford told the media during what coach Bill Foster said would be Horford's last press interview until he appears in a game for the Hurricanes.

"He needs the chance to become a student and enjoy college life," Foster said. "Depending on the NCAA, we think he will become eligible (to play) in September, and certainly by next January," Foster said. In the meantime, Horford will begin practicing with the team after classes and a physical exam today, "so that he will begin to know his teammates and fully feel like he is part of the whole university program," the coach said. Foster and Miami Athletic Director Sam Yankovich shut off questions about Horford's college entrance troubles during the past few months, during which he was denied admission to the University of Houston, dismissed by LSU and rejected by UCLA, Kentucky and Louisville. But Horford said he felt during that period, "why should this happen to me?" "The past is behind him and we are going to forget about that," Foster said.
