Harwell and Dewey call themselves "The Defenders of Joseph Smith" and sav Wallv Tniv nnH BOISE (UPI) Two former Mormons who say they are defending the principles of church founder Joseph Smith plan to debate backers of an anti-Mormon group in a meeting already described by a church spokesman as "divisive and harsh." Curtis Harwell and Joe Dewey, who said they were excommunicated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1978 for differing with church leaders, will face two members of the Saints Alive group Friday night at Boise State Universi- James Gordon Blake Siamese twins occur once in every 2.5 million births. The twins' malady is similar to that of Lisa and Elisa Hansen, Siamese twins who are now 6 years old and who the same doctors separated five years ago. Although the case is similar to that of the Elisa Hansen twins, Dwan warned against making comparisons. "The extent of joining is different in every case," he said.

"It's much too early to make a prognosis." The Hansen twins underwent three preparatory surgeries before the May 30, 1979, operation that separated them when they were 19 months old. The girls shared about 1 inches of brain tissue. Dwan said doctors have decided to do the present surgery immediately rather than waiting until the girls are older and stronger because infants have smaller amounts of brain tissue to cut. He said that lessens the risk of damage. Lisa and Elisa Hansen both suffer muscle weakness on opposite sides of their bodies and wear leg braces and one twin does not yet walk.

They attend public school in Davis County. Peter Heilbrun, professor of neurosurgery at the University of Utah, also is part of the team that separated the Hansen twins and who will helped operate Wednesday. David and Patricia Hansen, parents of the twins who were separated in May, 1979, invited the parents of the California infants to their home to share their experiences. "Our prayers are with them," Hansen said. "We had a real strong faith in the doctors down there (at the medical center) and felt that we made the best possible choice.

They're a lot like we are. They knew what had to be done." SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) Siamese twins connected at the head and who share brain tissue will be monitored by doctors who have completed the first of a series of operations aimed at separating the two-month-old girls. The surgeons "took a giant step toward separating them," University of Utah Medical Center spokesman John Dwan said Wednesday following the surgery. Dwan said Dr. Theodore Roberts and Dr.

Marion L. "Jack" Walker intended to do only exploratory surgery and cut skin flaps to cover the babies' heads following separation. But the surgeons decided to start cutting arteries and veins shared by the twins and slipped a silicon separator sheet between the lobes of the girls' brains, he said. "Doctor Roberts says they tolerated the operation well and now we have to see how they recover the next day or so," Dwan said. The doctors will be watching for seizures and infections common in brain operations, he said.

Dwan said the doctors were optimistic the operation will be successful and estimate the next surgery will occur in one to two weeks. He said the girls appear to be normal neurologically even though they share brain tissue. "Everyone is very hopeful," Dwan said, "but it's a very, very complex case." The infant girls, named Ashley and Patricia, were born March 9. Their parents are native Utahns living in Southern California, Dwan said. He said doctors decided against releasing the names of the parents, who have four other children.

ST. GEORGE James Gordon Blake, age 76, of St. George, died Tuesday, May 15, 1984, at the Dixie Medical Center. He was born March 16, 1908, in Bloomington to Wallis and Isadore Larson Blake. He married Delia Stimpson May 14, 1928, in Poca-tello, Idaho.

Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple. Blake was a lifetime stockman and Dave Hunt, supporters of the anti-Mormon Saints Alive group, will play the role of "The Defenders of Orthodox Christianity." Ted Johnson, a spokesman for the Mormon Church in the Boise area, said he called Harwell after he saw a newspaper advertisement about the debate. "I told him I felt their approach was divisive and kind of harsh," Johnson said. "I wanted to make it clear the church is not involved with this.

We don't want to be colored with their brush." Harwell said Wednesday he and Dewey did not consider themselves anti-Mormon. But he said they have different interpretations than the church on many of the teachings of Smith, who founded the church in the 1800s. "His principles and teachings should be defended, but no one is defending them," Harwell said. "We think the Mormons are wrong to not defend themselves against their critics," Dewey said. Johnson said he did not oppose the two former Mormons' right to "do their own thing." "But these types of things usually generate more heat than light," the church spokesman said.

"To emphasize controversy is not a good approach in a pluralistic community like ours." Johnson said he might attend the debate to learn more about the participants' aims. Harwell said, "We hope it stirs up a little controversy. We already have received so much flak. There's already a lot of tension, and there will be tension at the debate. But we hope it is a stepping stone to other things." rancher in southern Utah.
