Hatch says White in Vesco scheme WASHINGTON (UPI) Sen. Orrin Hatch said Thursday he believes, on the basis of recordings and other material, that Democratic national chairman John White may have taken part in a plot to benefit Libya and fugitive financier Robert Vesco. "The information we have, the tapes we have, accuse him of being part of the the Utah Republican told reporters following a public hearing by a Senate judiciary subcommittee investigating alleged contacts between Vesco and U.S. officials. "I will say there's lots of evidence on these tapes that he was part of the plot," continued Hatch, who visited Vesco twice in the Bahamas earlier this year.

Many of the tapes were made by an informant named James Feeney, who was prosecuted for fraud in Denver earlier this year. Lawyers for White issued a sweeping denial earlier this month that White had a role in a purported plot to deliver 12 embargoed U.S. airplanes to Libya in exchange for which Vesco allegedly was to receive $12 million and other favors. White's personal lawyer, Stuart Pierson, has filed a court motion in seeking access to tapes and pereyer suppressed materials filed in connection with Feeney's case, whose contents were carried in the news media. "John was never part of any such scheme." Pierson repeated Thursday.

"Ever." He said records in the Denver' court show "there was an impostor for John White. There was a man who passed himself off to Vesco and the Libyans as John Hatch, asked if he meant to say he' believes White was part of the plot, said, "Yes, I do.
