CEDAR CITY Iron County is celebrating its rich heritage in ranching and the western pioneer lifestyle Friday and Saturday with the ninth annual Cedar Livestock and Heritage Festival. The festival opens Friday morning and includes many Western- oriented activities such as a quilt gathering, cowboy poetry and music, a draft horse show and demonstration, and any more events with he traditional run of approximately 1,000 sheep down Main Street during the Saturday morning arade as one of the main a ttractions. onna Christiansen, parade chairwoman for the festival, said the parade is still open to en- rants until noon Friday. A ll entries, however, ust have a Western or heritage theme and be approved by the parade committee. he said ranchers usually bring their sheep a nd cattle from their grazing areas in the ountains back down to the Cedar Valley in October as cooler weather begins to set in.

hristiansen said in addition to the activities riday and Saturday, there will be a nondenominational cowboy church service Sunday orning at Frontier Homestead State Park. ori Rowley was and as the fourth generation of the Nelson family, a prominent sheep ranching amily in Iron County. he is the daughter of Carl Nelson. Rowley recalls that when she was growing up, she did not view the sheep ranching business as fun. It was a lot of work, and we were there all the she said.

George DixieMedicare.Com Charles Walter Odd, age 83, passed away October 15, 2014 in St. George, Utah. He was born in Provo, Utah on December 30, 1930 to Walter Thomas Odd and Della Burch Odd. He was married to Joan Jespersen in the Salt Lake Temple on June 8, 1956. Charles grew up in Ogden, Utah where he graduated from Ogden High School and Weber Jr.

College before joining the United States Air Force in 1950. He served four years in the service. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force he continued his education at the University of Utah and graduated in 1957. His early working years were spent at Convair, in San Diego, California. After ve years at Convair, he went to work for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California where he worked for the remainder of his working career.

He worked on such projects as Galileo, Voyager, and Mariner. Charles loved the out-of- doors. He especially liked the wilderness areas of the Uintah Mountains. He liked such sports as skiing (downhill and cross country), hiking, backpacking, and running. He was a member of the Audubon Society and a life-long birder.

He had an interest in photography and enjoyed taking pictures of the birds he saw and of his family. He was also an avid reader. He spent many hours researching the history of his grandfather and wrote a history of his life and ancestry. He was in the process of gathering his journals and letters and having them published into a book for family members. He enjoyed being with his family and looked forward to family gatherings with his children and grandchildren.

He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many leadership positions. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Veloy Thompson. He is survived by his wife and four children: Cheryl (Wally) Carlstrom, David (Bonnie), Susan (Sean) Walton, and Stephen (Jennifer); brother, Frank (Joan) Odd, stepbrother, Earl Green; 18 grandchildren; and ve great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sunset Stake Center, 82 North Dixie Drive, St.

George, Utah. A visitation will be held prior to services on Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Stake Center. Interment will be at the Tonaquint Cemetery.

She was born June 16, 1930 in Blackfoot, Idaho to Festus Russell and Sarah Mavera Shore Harkness. She married Donald Theone Jones (deceased) May 20, 1948 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. They were blessed with eight children: Judith Ann (Paul Tinker), Salt Lake City, UT, deceased, Arthur Theone (Mary Jeanette Thompson) Moses Lake, WA, Patrick Harkness (Lanore Smuin) Monteview, ID, Susan Leigh (Kirk Romney) Eagle Mountain, UT, Isaac Lloyd, Enterprise, UT, Donna Marie (Brian McCann) Boring, OR, Rebecca June, Brewster, NY, and Edna Lou (Lonnie Zeller) McCleary, WA, 34 grandchildren and 53 great grandchildren so far! June grew up with three siblings, Sarah Audrey Hopkins (Ray), deceased, Eugene Russell (Pauline) deceased, and John Nephi (Janice).

Her family grew potatoes and various other crops for sale. They were living in Pingree, Idaho when June met Don, her algebra Mary June Harkness Jones Enterprise June met Don, her algebra teacher. After Don returned from the military, they were married in the LDS temple in Idaho Falls, ID; lived in Provo, UT, Bartlesville, OK, Idaho Falls, Basalt, Terreton, and Hamer, ID, Wells, NV, Enterprise and Eagle Mountain, UT. June is the best of moms and grandmothers, bus driver, and insurance secretary. In her later years she enjoyed working for a Beehive Care Facility.

She was an excellent seamstress and taught piano lessons to most of her eight children, the lucky ones at least! She was the best source for gardening and could grow anything. All kinds of handiwork kept her busy, especially knitting baby afghans for all of the great-grandchildren as they were born. Her greatest pride and joy are her children and grandchildren! She planned for the family reunions each year all year long! She will be sorely missed. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Enterprise 5th Ward Chapel, 620 Main Street, Enterprise, Utah.

A visitation will be held Saturday prior to services from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the chapel. Interment will be at the Enterprise Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221.

McLean Simkins passed away peacefully on October 19, 2014, at the North Canyon Care Center in Bountiful, Utah. He was 90 years old. Mac was born on May, 3, 1924 in Cedar City, Utah to Robert Bulloch Simkins and Ellen Ashdown Simkins. He was the second of seven children and was preceded in death by his parents, his older sister Glenis Orton, his younger sister Connie Baldwin and his younger brothers Robert and Gayle.

On February 24, 1951, Mac married Elma Topham in the St. George Temple. They had two sons, Sterling McLean and Derol Robert. Elma passed away in June of 1988, leaving a terrible hole in life that he was never able to ell. Dad loved Cedar and especially the members of the Cedar 1st Ward where he lived for the erst 85 years of his life.

After moving to Bountiful in 2009, he often reminisced and longed for the good old days in Iron County and the company of his dear friends and family. Now he is enjoying a happy reunion with many of them on the other side. McLean is survived by his brother Kenneth Simkins (Donlee), Boulder City, NV, his sister Rae Bradeeld (Tom), New Harmony, UT, his sons Sterling (Robyn), Bountiful, UT and Derol (Francine), West Jordan, Utah, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 24, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the LDS Rock Church in Cedar City. Viewings will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at Southern Utah Mortuary, 190 300 in Cedar City.

Interment will be in the Cedar City Cemetery under the arrangement of Southern Utah Mortuary. Shirley was preceded in death by two sons, Levi Hartiman and Samuel Lee Freedell III, two daughters her eldest Jonnie Rebecca Valeski Ransom, and her youngest daughter Nancy Diane Daniels Powers and grandson Joey Powers. Shirley has 8 adored grandchildren. Shirley was known for her loving and caring spirit and nature, and a sincere belie and devoted love for Jesus Christ her Savior. Graveside services will take place in the Enoch City Cemetery, Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements entrusted to the SWINDLEHURST FUNERAL HOME.
